Required Documents

To open a bank account, you will need your passport, visa, and a local phone number. Volunteers at the university will help you get a mobile phone number on your first day of check-in. Some banks may also request proof of address, this could be your university dormitory address or, if you live off-campus, your rental address.

Application Process

Visit a bank branch in person. Major banks such as Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) offer services for foreigners. Bank Selection Depends on Your Country of Residence. The bank that can issue you a card may vary depending on your home country. In most cases, students use ICBC. However, if you are a citizen of certain countries, for example, Iran, the designated bank is often Bank of Kunlun (昆仑银行).

Always check this information with your university supervisors or international student office before going to the bank.

Using the Card

In China, electronic payment via QR code scanning in WeChat and Alipay is widely used. After your bank card is issued, you can link it to these apps and enjoy cashless payments. However, since it takes about 5 working days to get your bank card, you can ask other students on campus, such as Chinese students or supervisors, for help with currency exchange during your first days. This means you give them cash, and they transfer the equivalent amount to your WeChat or Alipay.

UnionPay cards are accepted almost everywhere in China. They are convenient for in-store purchases, ATM withdrawals, and online payments. Many stores and services also support payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay, which can be linked to your card.

Connect to WeChat & Alipay Once you have your card:

  1. Open WeChat / Alipay
  2. Go to "Cards" or "Wallet"
  3. Add your new bank card
  4. Verify with SMS — done!

Important Notes

- Keep all banking documents and receipts.

- If your card is lost or stolen, block it immediately via the mobile app or by contacting the bank.

- Protect your banking information and never share it with others.

Opening a bank card in China may seem complicated, but by following these recommendations, you can successfully get a card and enjoy all the benefits of banking services in the country.
