About Beijing Foreign Studies University

Founded in 1941, Beijing Foreign Studies University is one of China’s best-known foreign-language universities and has the longest history among its kind in the country. It is officially recognized under Project 211, the Project 985 Innovation Platform, and the Double First-Class Initiative. BFSU is located in Beijing, giving students access to the political, diplomatic, and cultural center of China. The university describes itself as offering a complete range of degrees, diplomas, and programs at various levels, with the largest number of foreign-language programs in China. It was the first university in China to recruit and teach international students, and among the earliest to offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs for Chinese as a foreign language. BFSU’s international-student portfolio spans degree study and non-degree study, including preparatory and visiting-student options. Current catalogs show undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral admissions across law, international relations, translation and interpreting, Chinese language and literature, foreign languages and literatures, education, journalism and communication, country and area studies, and related interdisciplinary fields. English-taught undergraduate options include business, economics, and English-related study, while many graduate and doctoral offerings are taught in Chinese or bilingual Chinese/English formats. The university also highlights strong practice-oriented areas such as international relations, translation, global communication, and area studies. Its official pages stress a broad international network and long-standing role in training globally oriented graduates. Scholarship options for international students include Chinese government, Beijing government, and BFSU scholarships, with some awards covering tuition, accommodation, insurance, and living support.
