About University of Manitoba

The University of Manitoba, founded in 1877, is the oldest university in Western Canada and the largest and only research-intensive post-secondary institution in Manitoba. It is a member of the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities and attracts the most research funding in the province. The university has over 31,900 students from more than 120 countries, creating a culturally diverse community. Its campuses are located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on the original lands of several Indigenous peoples and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. UM offers more than 250 undergraduate and graduate programs and is the only institution in Manitoba that educates lawyers, engineers, architects, actuaries, and the majority of healthcare professionals.

Funding

Scholarships

The University of Manitoba awards $40 million annually in scholarships, bursaries, and prizes to students based on financial need and academic merit. This includes over $3.5 million in entrance scholarships for new students each year, with most awarded automatically based on high school grades when applying by the March 1 deadline. International students are eligible for various entrance scholarships, in-course scholarships, and bursaries. Graduate students may receive International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarships at admission and other competitive funding opportunities through their departments and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

McCall MacBain International Fellowships

  • Coverage: Up to CAD $30,000 per fellowship for a full year abroad
  • Eligibility: Canadian citizen or permanent resident; aged 19-24 on Jan 1, 2026; enrolled full-time in a first-entry undergraduate program at UM; minimum CGPA of 3.0; completed required academic terms; not graduated; in good standing; limited prior extended international experience

Tony T.K. Lau Scholarship for Volunteer Service to International Students

  • Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full-time (min 80% load) at UM; minimum DGPA of 3.5; volunteered to help international students adapt through International Centre programs or other University activities
